ABC of Babysitting while visiting children in USA

ABC of Babysitting while   visiting children in USA
Babysitting is temporarily caring for a child. It emerged as a social role for teenagers in 1920. In suburban America it became important in 1950s  and 1960s when there was abundance of small children. In India also the concept of Babysitting is not much popular as working parents find it necessary for someone to take care of their small children at  home .  In many families the parents of the male member or the female member who happened to be senior citizen come and stay with such working couple and take care of their children at home, Of course the presence of elder members like parents and others in extended families make the children feel at home comfortable when both the parents work and are available at home only during holidays.

Being grandparents of four American born grandchildren it became necessary to visit them periodically after retirement from service in 2007.Blessed with tiny kids we feel privileged and happy to visit our children and grandchildren in America since 2007 till now. 2018….say around 8 times and in a period of twelve years till 2018 had presence in U S A   during the last ten years.

It was an opportunity to experience and enjoy the pleasure of Babysitting coupled with visiting various places there along with children, In short out of fifty states of the United states of America, we had occasion to   picnic or stay in more than 13 states namely Kentucky, New  Jersey , Oklahoma ,Texas, California, Massachusetts, Chicago, Michigan, Cincinnati, Washington DC, Nebraska, Tennessee, etc, ,Arizona, Florida, etc.

It was after retirement from service in 2007 we had to be with our daughter at Austin Texas when she was preparing for her admission in US for Medical residency, preparing for USMLE exams, etc. Her   mother used to sit with her during her preparations supporting with occasional snacks, tea. Coffee etc and were stationed at our son's house at Austin.

In 2007 Austin Texas was the first place we had to stay where our first granddaughter Dhwani was born, We were   taking care of her since her 3rd month after  birth . I was necessary as both our son and daughter in law were working and we need to k look after the child at home during their absence .As a routine babysitting we took care to note the timings of feeding the child with milk every two hours …by noting down the timetable in a white board hung in the kitchen. We had to change her diapers and sit with the child showing some new things or actions , Also it was necessary to sit with the child around the rocker listening to some musical tune adjusted and hear d while the rocker was rotating and child remaining sleeping , Other daily duty ended after the father or mother returned home after work by 5 PM. It was a pleasure living in the sole company   of   the grandkid realizing the depth of love and affection we had toward the child by seeing the smiling or crying face of the infant   with different expressions in face. Growth of teeth and teething trouble, change of food from liquid to semi solid, giving her bath every two days using tub,   towel , soap, etc was part of our routine. It was all interesting and enjoyable. More interesting were the times she spilt milk or threw away food not found tasty or palatable by her and the   costumes  or new dresses worn by her now and then. Austin being capital of the state Texas had a large of computer related companies.

It was Boston capital of Massachusetts in 2013 where the granddaughter Poorvi through our daughter was born, It was her mother's privilege at Beverley Hospital M  Salem  MA from time of birth  and all others including me were at home or say the apartment at Salem for about 5 months taking care of the baby, Boston is an important place in the state of  Massachusetts. Later in 2017 we were back at California at San Jose to take care of grandson Vaibhav through daughter , We enjoyed staying there too taking care of the children.

Later in 2017 we were back at California at San Jose to take care of grandson Vaibhav through daughter , We enjoyed staying there too taking care of the children and also being with the children of our son at Fremont who stayed nearby daughter's house in California at  Santa  Clara.

ABC of Baby sitting or Austin, Boston, California of Babysitting is being experienced and enjoyed by us being present at these places during births of grandchildren and also visiting many other states of USA during the   said   period and seeing many new places. Among others some of the places we visited are Marathon caves Kentucky, Pentagon, New York,   Nasdaq   Stock Exchange, United States Senate Chamber at Washington DC,U S Bureau of Engraving and Printing US Currency, New York Stock Exchange, White house at Washington DC, Universal studios, Florida, Los Angeles,  San Diego, Chicago, Manhattan, Washington square , Tennessee, Corpus Christie , Nebraska, statue of liberty,  Liberty Island, Golden gate San Francisco, Ghirardelli  Chocolate  factory California, Toyota Car making facility  at  Georgetown ,Kentucky state, Eiffel Towers, Disney Land etc..Las Vegas, Tulsa Oklahoma, Michigan, Washington DC,. The periods of our Babysitting in USA reminds us of days   when we brought up our kids under our complete control, supervision and   presence  and at that time there was no need to leave children under such Babysitters as there was no necessity. We have been fortunate to live with our parents during our childhood with no   Babysitting etc.

During our visit to USA last year in 2017 we were specifically required to take care of our grandson Vaibhav and a poem written in this  connection   is given below…
Neither am a Night Watchman in Cricket Match,
Nor a Goal keeper in   soccer or football watch,
Remain as Daycare father or mother great,
Enjoy the visit as a Baby sitter or grandfather right..

Enjoy the dawn of morning see smiling face of toddler,
Feed him milk, formula  ,semi solid and fruit matter,
Get bitten by incisors erupt as six months old,
Pat and touch at back help him sleep as told.

Little deeds of kids remind us go,
Acts of love we showered and felt   years ago,
When we too played  , learnt and troubled them as kids,
Parents were from   of God who take care of us for all odds.

What is life without love we feel and remember and remain,
One between the man and woman in love which rarely remain,
The strong one among siblings and children of parents  so dear,
The strongest being love of father and mother to children  for ever.

Dress him warm with cloth  and shining
Make him sit in high chair standing,
change bib or diaper and  do wiping ,
Clean   overflowing mouth of liquid   after eating,

Support him stand amidst  crawling ,sitting and climbing,
Cover the sleeping kid in crib with warm clothing,
Watch him steal and taste particles lying on  ground ,
Pull him back while   crawling behind grandma old ,
Moves around the   island in kitchen and rooms around,
He pulls  all electric power  cable attached in wall good.

Fever or cold he faces with infection,
Medicines and care of parents found for perfection,
He joins us see TV programs when free in noon,
Dance of Jimikki   kamal   dance  and others seen.

In guarded stroller we take him out,
Go to the Murdock  park in and out,
Allow his father   work throughout,
Assist us complete our daily workout.

This is the routine   life of senior grandparents,
Who live in America as visitors and parents,
Of children who were kids sometime   thus,
And bestow   their children as gifts for us.

About California where we stayed for   maximum period

Orange   is a city located in Orange County,  California. California is a state of fruits and nuts...My granddaughter calls her new house in San Jose as orange trees' house and she is studying in school   Appleseed   Montessori at Sunnyvale CA..My daughter works in Kaiser Permanente Medical Center  , Santa Clara  CA which she says is next to I pad, etc maker Apple Inc.
++++++++++++++++++++++++
Apple is an American multinational technology company that is   headquartered in Cupertino, California, which   designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services
**********************************
Many cities , counties ,states in USA  are having names related to fruits.
I recollect one place Tiruchirapalli in Tamilnadu where we have lived for six years from 1988 famous for sugarcane, paddy, banana fruits, mangoes, etc .It was pleasure for children to climb trees and pluck mangoes ,gua fruits  and eat after sharing with others. I remember my elder sister Lakshmi who visited us at Tiruchirapalli once asking in our language Tamil Malayalam ..''Raghavaa  ..oru perakkai.. porichu  tharaya??..meaning   Oh  Raghava.. will you  pluck and get me one gua fruit ??? Incidentally I recollect her staying at Mayavaram Lodge , Tiruchirapalli and getting me  Adai Aviyal, etc there   My eldest sister Parvathi who visited us once during Mahamaham  festival of Kumbakonam on 18 th February,1992 also tasted the mangoes and accompanied us to Kumbakonam for seeing the festival and  Jayalalithaa on her birthday.. Magam star.
Mango pickles like Avakkai, etc were  made, distributed to relatives and stored in ceramic jars for whole year and ripe fruits eaten .. Of course my spouse took care of selling  surplus fruits, coconuts and drumsticks at very good rates and saving  money from the proceeds . In addition there were  many coconut trees in the house at Thillainagar, Tiruchirapalli ..with tender coconuts, the sweet water and the coconuts from a number of trees  providing us cool water, coconuts for making daily dishes like sambar, koottu, chutney, etc.
Here in Fremont CA at our son's house, we have the following trees, plants, grapevines  growing fruits.
Grapes,
Pomegranate,
Apple,
Kiwi fruit,
Pear,
Avocado ,.
Plum,
Gua ..a variety,
Orange and lemon plants are just  planted and are growing.
There are twenty-four rose plants surrounding the house with different colors flowering in abundance during seasons' pluck and keep one flower in front of lamp near the pictures of God..Goddess daily...
Bagavad Gita  says...
patram pushpam phalam toyam yo me bhaktyaa prayacchati |
tadaham bhaktyupahritamashnaami prayataatmanaha || 26 ||

One who presents a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water with devotion to me, I will consume that loving gift from that pure hearted being.
Tomato large size and small size ...... ..
..Cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes ..as called  are grown throughout the year in large quantities ..
It is in daughter's new house at San Jose..near  Cupertino, A we have trees of orange, lemon and naarthangai grown in large quantities throughout the year and thus granddaughter calls is Orange Tree house  .
It is tasty and medically healthy to eat some of these fruits..
We eat apple daily .as we have heard...An apple a day keeps the Doctor away....

We get all vegetables in USA and we make our vegetarian dishes making use of them. In this connection a small write up is given here..

Ammachi cutting vegetables and fruits in America....

We   get   all   types  of vegetables   and fruits  in USA  and most of them we get and use in India . Also many vegetables are grown in  our houses  as we have seen at Hazard KY where my brother  Dr Narayan stays...they grow green chilies, brinjal, ladies finger, tomato, peerkankai,  beans, apple, etc in large quantities. in Fremont CA    where our son Rajesh stays..they have all fruits almond, cashew nut, apples, plum, grapes, mango, etc large number of flowers of rose variety, and in Marblehead Salem MA where our daughter Chitra lives they have apples, brinjal, tomato,  greens , and pumpkin  white and yellow ... also  grown regularly in their backyards, and in New Jersey where our Sudha stays and Tulsa where Sridhar stays...they too have all fruits  and lemon.. narthangai, etc in large quantities. Our daughter Chitra during her Medical Residency at Omaha, Nebraska used to say the state being largely agriculture based with   mechanical tools for plouging, watering, removing, and corns, beans, sugarcane are main crops grown there.

Tartaric acid, Citric acid, Oxalic Acid, Malic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Picric acid  ,salicylic acids, and others are found in fruits. Many of the fruits contain fructose which may not be good for  diabetics  but there are fruits containing less of sugar  and others containing less salt or Sodium chloride etc.. .which we have to choose as  per needs or body restrictions. Banana fruit contains Potassium but also fructose...so it  is  to be decided for consumption for people having blood sugar level, cholesterol problems .. Hypertension   etc. Mango fruit contains maximum sugar   content as also date fruit which diabetics should   avoid..Papaya and koyyappazham are generally preferred for diabetics containing less fructose   but with a little energy, proteins etc..

Some vegetables nuts are  alkaline  like Almond, artichoke, asparagus, avacadoe,Basil, beetroot, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbages, carrot, cauliflower celery, cilantro, cocoanut, cumin, eggplant,Garlic, Ginger, green beans, grapefruit, etc

They may not be acidic also, so that you can get body pH levels alkaline   by  taking many above alkaline foods.

In particular we see in America   vegetables are  of  huge or large sizes when compared the size  we see in India..and neatly packed in polythene bags after cutting,peeling,washing,etc..
Mostly vegetables and fruits are  received from neighboring countries...orange, apple, are largely grown in US also.

Okra, egg plant,  etc..are some names...commonly heard.

It is a good experience to see such large number of vegetables fruits etc in USA  and use them...Some of the rare vegetables like Avocado, brussels, etc are very good for health...which we do not get in plenty in India .We see them fresh and neatly packed and any vegetable spoiled  and found unusable is thrown out  and neither sold nor used by any.

In India also we  grow and get a large number of vegetables, greens etc having medicinal properties and we should make use of them as remedy provided by nature or God for our health problems.

There are many herbal preparations as oil, lehyam, kashayam etc as medicines in Ayurveda using herbs and roots of plant used for medical treatment relating to brain or Central nervous system,. called.... Mental disorder/ illness, psychological disorders, psychiatric disorders, etc  and these herbal medicines are found effective....

So nature is abundant with all human needs for existence and survival...

Cutting vegetables is an art or talent  generally  entrusted to the oldest lady in the house  who takes care of   choosing and cutting them so that the sides are neatly peeled, skin removed, internal seeds thrown out, pieces are made small in geometric sizes, washed again in  water before using etc.  and AMMA was given that work in addition to cooking,  supervising and tasting the final products...

My personal computer …finally reduced to a screen, keyboard and CPU all replaced…

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I bought my first personal computer a desktop in 2000 while I was in Tuticorin in Tamilnadu.  I don't remember the brand name   some   Solitaire or Solidaire or something .It was not from HP, Dell, Microsoft or Apple as these names we not heard by me then. It had a monitor, CPU, Keyboard, two external speakers brand Microtek and one HP printer probably I got it later from Coimbatore I don't member. The floppy discs were in use then which is not used now. Of course we have pen drive and all other external storage devices now. I narrate the history of events when each part got replaced, gifted, repaired etc and finally the external speakers Microtek also got replaced yesterday. The total cost of the whole system was around Rs 32000 if I remember correct and the prices have become much cheaper now. The book value of the computer will be less than Re 1 today   since it is over nineteen years after it was bought.

During my visit to USA in 1993 I had occasion to see almost all these parts in personal computers and use them I learnt about computer operations during my stay in USA in my  younger brother's house where I had gone on 6 month's tourist visa. He used to guide   me   about   basics of computer and we used to have some Operating system I don't remember if it   was Windows etc and internet had not come to use by public. During my visits to various places in USA I used to spend a part of time using Computer, learning the basics and also prepared a database of various places visited   and had it printed using a printer attache ind to the personal computer.

Again in 1999 or so I got a Note Book computer from my brother      which   we call laptop now without much features and used to operate it with no provision for internet facility and communication.

While using the computer bought in 2000 there was no internet connectivity for public …the mechanic who supplied computer used to come and install some internet connectivity for limited period on payment. , However I had to   got    to   browsing shop for sending any message to my son who was in USA since 2000 and this computer became operational for internet communication after some months. The computer I was using to see   results   online and convey  of my daughter who was studying Medicine in   PERUNDURAI,  Medical College  ,Erode, TN  and also of her classmates and inform periodically.

Now that eighteen years are over many changes happened to my computer.  On each occasion   son or daughter used to visit India they used to bring and leave on laptop at home for use and throw or sale. In addition they used to bring one screen, keyboard or CPU or microphone, etc   My    elder brother Ananthanarayanan   who was staying nearby in Besanthnagar Madras used to have two or three computers at his home with a local area net work etc.   Whenever I go to his house he was busy with the computers being a retired man and much interested in various activities like world news, Astrology, Medicine ,Music' etc So I remember having given one of my CPU and screen or monitor to him which he used to connect to his net work system , In the process of having some Office work like inquiry reports against staff members of the Bank etc I used the printer by getting A4 papers etc and later removed the printer as it occupied space and printing found not required after retirement .Of course in the house I have connected the computer to one of the lines of power supply coming from Power  Inverter or UPS   and as such the UPS which was previously attached to the computer also  removed  and kept in a safe loft in the house. Meantime keyboards have been changed occasionally while getting one during return of USA visits or the children and others coming etc.

Ultimately the Microtek speaker was remaining connected to the PC although not used. It was yesterday I got by Amazon a packet containing a      small    size        external  speakers for the computer sent by my son Rajesh. I removed the old Speakers and connected the new ones. However I felt sorry in throwing away the old speakers and instead have kept them safe in some place in the house.

My son, son in law, daughter and daughter in law all tell me when the y visit India and    see   my possession that is the    Personal Computer to throw away the present PC and get a new one. But I like to retain it with its hard discs etc all filled with thousands of Photos, Blogs, writings, so many other matters etc, which they do not know. This is after    deleting many unwanted photos, posts etc as the   disks   are almost full and no place for g mail   , Face book   or any   other things.

We or I feel sad to throw away or discard old things but like to keep them safe as a contemporary for me. See the picture of External speaker disconnected yesterday but preserved for future and kept safe along with discarded UPS, Printer, and monitors, power cords ,mouse ,pendrives    etc.. .

Again   my wife always complains that   I keep all old things for years together and get unnecessary things now   and   them. Even this new speaker she was asking me why     do            you get a new one when the old one is working   and that you are wasting money. But I tell her   to retain   things belonging to her remaining for decades in the house   like I got her one MERRITT sewing   Machine in 1974 at Rs 320. .from LRDE  Canteen, Bangalore   through my elder brother Sundaram who was with LRDE after my marriage in 1974..It   was given to her as present by me so that she would   be engaged in work at home ,Although the  sewing machine has accompanied us   to various places of posting in India  say around 21 during my service in Bank I have  never found her using it anytime.

So that is our liking for anything old and in life also we feel happy that children, grandchildren etc like as may be because we are old and getting older.  OLD is   gold

. Given   below is the picture of my speakers temporarily    discarded

Welcome to schools

We are glad children after holidays for over one month are joining back to school from Tuesday or Monday . We wish them all the best … any child feels thrilling and happy to go to school while re opening and entering the next higher class on promotion .

Vaibhav must be entering 1st Grade and Poorvi 5 th grade , Dhwani 8 th grade and Jahnvi 4 th grade .

We returned from USA in May 2023 end when schools were about to end the academic year .

We recall our presence there about 6 months prior to May 23 and be with children going to school .

I had the morning walk of accompanying Vaibhav to school in Murdock Portal . After reaching school used  to remain behind his classmates till the teacher called them in lines by 8.15 and took inside class.
While going to school and returning , it was a daily sight to see the signal lady , signal man and a few senior citizen waiting there around .

While at home , to cope with their time schedule , I used to wake up Amma by 5.30 AM help her make coffee from coffee drinkers . Later after taking the washed vessels from Dishwasher , commenced day's work by cutting vegetables .Prior to this I used to switch off security alarm, lest Amma May open some doors leading to sound of security alarm

It was seen Chitra / Sreekanth getting up early, taking bath and waking up the kids to get ready to go to school by 8 AM.

Some urgent or fast work by Amma and me
Making breakfasts for us , cooking food for lunch ..
For children I used to search their tiffin boxes, school boxes, umbrella, coats , socks, shoes etc

Meanwhile Amma asking their preference prepare food to eat and carry to school, also fill in their boxes including food, one fruit box, snacks , water bottle , etc…

After they left we were free to take our breakfast , orange fruits, etc and get ready for taking bath and finish completion of making lunch.

Just a beginning of our memory ..

We remember many episodes , food preparations, visitors , visits etc

We stop it just our first note on the occasion of children going back to school .

Don't forget to carry Thursday yellow folder and all Library books etc
Bye bye

Paruvakkattu House By P.SundaraMoorthy

Written by P.Sundaramoorthy

Paruvakkattu House
This is the house which is on Vadakke Angadi Road in Thrissur, where many of the piyer had the golden days in life.
The whole house had tiled drooping roves, on wooden frames and proper ceilings on all rooms.
The area of the house is around 60 ft by 200ft.
1.Entrance:Had a big door, with considerably big platforms on either side (with tiled roof dropping type) , wherein vegetable vendors used to sit and do the sales. Plus had an incident of Raghavan accidentally closing the door with a snake in between.
As one enters the house a few feet to the right was an open enclosure about (6ft by 6 ft) with 4 sides of 2 feet high walls and 3 granite statues of snake/ god , was known as Sarpa kavu.
2.Garden: (A). Front(flowers): Had the following flower plants
Rose button, Rose red and other colors,Kashi Thumba, Nandiyar vatta,Gandarajan, malli(double and single pettled) and coimbature malli, the thin one.,kanni kurka, thumbapoo,Decemberpoo,Jandu malli,Nalumani poo,Cockscomb and Perakka plant.
(B). Vegetables grown on back side: Avarakai,Cholam, Chembu,Kurka (Chinese Poatato),Kuruthola payar(Karamani),Ginger,Manjal,Vendakka,Kathirikka,Mat han,
Elavan,Chenai,Pachamilagai,Chuni Milagai,

There were about 5 to 6 varieties of plantains(trees) all round the house totally about 100 numbers in all. avrakka had a pendant raised with bamboo sticks etc about (10ft by 10 ft) for the creeper to growand spread, we used to collect avarakkai fresh about an arikinchatti full ( may be about 5 kgs).
3.Front Veranda
At the entrance to the main house, there was thinnai extending either side with platform on either side for people to squat on.
4.Hall: This was the main place where everything takes place, had a round table with an AC/DC Radio set on it, in another corner there was pooja room like all swami photos on wall, was bed room for almost all , golu used to be arranged in front of swami photos. The rooms had ceilings with wooden beams and in the hall from those beams with nails plantain bunches used to be hung and each one used to eat as and when liked from those bunches.Even Mathan/ elavan used to be hung I think. 5.Bulb Pottina Room: just as you enter from hall this room,
While playing ball in this room , the light bulb happened to break so the room was named after that .
6.Passage Room to Right: This is to right of hall, in front of it was the thittil room and to further right of it was the pathayam room.
7.Thottil Room: This room had a small thottil(Cradle) in the centre of the room.Almost all piyer kids must have grown up in this thottil.

8.Dining Hall/ Pathayam Room : This was high roofed without ceiling . In one corner there was this pathayam( granary storage container) wherein paddy used to be stored, had a capacity to store about 100 kgs may be 9.Kitchen:Had firewood aduppu, kalchaties, kories,Idli panai, etc for cooking.Aduppu muttal daily was an ordinance.
10.Kalavara: Store Room where we used to steel Jaggery/Vellam (achu),Coconut pinnakku etc and munch at leisure.
11.Kollathavaram:
This is a thinnai like long platform, some washings were done here, in front was the home grown Keera pathi.May be servant maid used to ash vessels here.
12. Main Bath Room:No taps or showers but only Anda and buckets and a (njalingina) pathram for bathing. 13.Small Bath Room attached to well: Here there is a pulley drive to collect water from the well and have bath or wash vessels or water plants.
14.Passage Room Left:
This room had the wooden ,fully covered storage space with shutters, just below the space of staircase.
15.Kattil Room : is the only room with a cot so was named thus.
16.Madi Padi (staircase): was of wood and had a storage space below with shutters.
17.Passage Room Right:
Was more like general purpose room, used to ennathelpikkalthe kids etc.

18. Almirah Room( in the madi): Is a bed room but had a glass doored almirah on which once I happened to hang on its door and fall down with the whole almirah and went to Dr Krishna Iyer for dressing with help of Manni.
19 . Hall( upstairs): in the upstairs was big and tiled floor ideal for murukku chuthaling and such activities.
20 . Passage Room left & right:(up stairs):These were upstairs and were general purpose passage rooms.
21. Konthai/Manni Bed Room : was their bed room upstairs.
All rooms had Attached nadan/local toilets , just a granite platform with outlet. No Indian/ Anglo Indian / western toilets those days.
22. Left veranda: we used to store vaikkol here because the thozhuthu with madu (cow shed with cow) and kannukutti was attached to this.
23.Back side Veranda outside Pathayam room, viragu(FireWood) and Nelagathil (a big brass vessel with two hooks hung from the roof of veranda with the help of long S hooks) used to be kept to store water exclusively for outside Toilet usage purpose.
24 Toilets(2)outside , 500 mts away from house.
One has to go with a chombu/bucket of water from the nilagadil.
There were the following trees at the back side: podiyini , konna, veppu(neem),Puli(tamarind) and a coconut
25. Fence(veli):
It was customary to build this fence, which is on on the left hand side and back side of the house, with bamboo bushes and bamboo strips once in a year .

White washing used to be done by an old man.

Testing Piyers Blog

This post is to test if I can post to piyers blog.
Appa has been writing consistently on the blog. I would also like to contribute.
Several things have happened in the last few years. Dhwani has grown into a wonderful 6 year old kid. She is enjoying her vacation in India.
We have had our 2nd daughter Jahnvi. She is such a bundle of joy. We just love being with her and cherish all her antics. She being the smallest of the cousins gets a lot of attention and pampering from everyone in the family. She seems to be unique as well in her way of saying things or mannerisms. Completely enjoyable.

I have moved 3 different jobs in 4 years. Moved from Dell to Sandisk and then moved to Hitachi Data Systems. Shwetha has moved from VMWare to Cadence.

Chitra,Sreekanth and Poorvi have moved to CA. Appa, amma have come to the US and will be attending Ram's wedding in September.
